I vividly remember the first ever episode of Coronation Street in December 1960. Yes I really am that old. I was eight years old and my parents had gone to the doctors for injections of some kind. My grandmother came round to look after me and suddenly the Corrie music struck up. Neither of us had any idea what it was. Neither did I have any idea that over 50 years later I would still be tuning in and watching virtually every episode. It’s still the best soap by miles. And that takes me to the point of this blog.
There is currently one of the best storylines for some time and with it some of the best acting. Judy Holt, Tony Hirst and Sue Cleaver should win Soap awards galore for the alzheimer’s storyline. Judy Holt in particular has been remarkable as Lesley, who is in the early stages of dementia. It’s a heartbreaking storyline beautifully acted with Judy having to show tremendous changes of character which must have been exhausting for her. Corrie is head and shoulders above any other Soap, especially Eastenders where the characters are unbelievable and wooden and how many more times do we want to see Phil Mitchell disintegrating?
Mind you there are a few inconsistencies. When have we seen a cash machine in Dev’s corner shop before? Suddenly this week one appeared because it fitted in nicely with a particular storyline.
